I worked in home security and AV long before voice assistants were common, and automation back then was brute force. You physically ran wires. You cut into walls. You installed relays and switches to make something turn on or off. It was the first system I owned that <em>normal people<\/em> could actually use. It had APIs, early device integrations, and enough flexibility to be genuinely useful. I experimented with it heavily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Alexa had a core limitation:<br><strong>it didn\u2019t follow you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, I\u2019d switched fully to Android. Google Maps, Gmail, Contacts, YouTube\u2014Google already ran my daily life. If I asked where something was, I didn\u2019t want it spoken into a room; I wanted it sent to my phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I pivoted to <strong>Google Home<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I scattered Google Home devices throughout the house and started adding Wi-Fi lights, switches, and smart plugs. For a while, it was great\u2014and during a difficult season, it was more than just a novelty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As my mom entered the late stages of cancer, voice-controlled lighting gave her independence. She could turn lights on and off without getting up. That alone made the system worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But cracks started to show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The IT Brain Ruins the Fun (Privacy, Networks, and Reality)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As my IT career advanced, I started asking uncomfortable questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why are light bulbs talking to the internet?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why is my Wi-Fi flooded with tiny always-connected devices?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why does one brand work with one ecosystem but not another?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why does a simple automation break when the internet blips?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google Home\u2014and cloud-first platforms in general\u2014were <strong>convenient<\/strong>, but they weren\u2019t <strong>reliable<\/strong>, <strong>private<\/strong>, or <strong>truly integrated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cameras didn\u2019t always play nicely. Doorbells were hit or miss. Automations were shallow. It worked, but it wasn\u2019t perfect. USB adapters everywhere. SD cards dying from constant writes (a lesson learned the hard way). No cloud. No outside dependency. No random firmware updates breaking automations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s when the house stopped being \u201csmart\u201d and started being <strong>intelligent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Automation That Actually Helps Daily Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This wasn\u2019t about showing off anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Morning routines that prepped ice baths automatically<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Garage heaters turning on before I stepped inside<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stairway lights activating based on motion and time of day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Door chimes customized exactly how I wanted<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lights reacting differently depending on presence, time, and context<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing required voice commands.<br>Nothing depended on the internet.<br>Everything just worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s the difference between <strong>gadgets<\/strong> and <strong>automation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Takeaway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people stop at smart devices.<br>That\u2019s fine\u2014until it isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you care about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reliability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Privacy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Network sanity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>True customization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then local-first automation isn\u2019t optional\u2014it\u2019s inevitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Home Assistant didn\u2019t just replace Google Home or Alexa for me.<br>It replaced the <em>idea<\/em> that automation has to be cloud-controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And once you cross that line, there\u2019s no going back.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before \u201csmart homes\u201d were a product category, home automation meant manual wiring.
